Detroit community group holds holiday dinner for homeless
Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- The Georgia Street Community Collective will host its first annual Holiday Dinner from 5-9 p.m. today at Christ World Outreach Ministries' annex, 8925 Holcomb.
The grass roots, community-based organization operates on the city's east side and hopes the dinner gives members a chance to meet people in the community they do not already know. The dinner is for people who are homeless in the area bounded by Gratiot, Harper and Van Dyke avenues and Grinnell Street.
The group's officials said the collective started as a community garden and grew into a neighborhood organization.
In 2009, the collective will begin a project in which it will rehabilitate an area building into a neighborhood store and community center.

The article at first was a misquote. We were not actually feeding the homeless at first, but we had so much food leftover we ended up taking it to a homeless shelter.
