Help Me Help A Family I Love

A lifelong member of our neighborhood was shot and killed on Monday, June 14,2010.
He was 23 years old and getting set to go visit his 2 year old daughter out of state.
Demonte Thomas was an awsome neighbor. He was in the garden more than I was. I would either get a call or a knock at the door if someone was in the garden or getting compost or woodchips out of the piles. I remember this fun loving, silly kid running up and down the street playing with the neighbor next door. His mom and her sisters babysat for my brothers and I. We grew up playing with his uncle, who was our first friend that we remember. I know this type of thing happens all across the country now, but this young man was not caught up in the thug life. He wanted to raise his daughter and be the best man he could be. Monte loved our neighbors and neighborhood. I can't express the numbness in the area right now. This is a tragic end to a bright future. It makes me want to give up but I know I can not. He wouldn't want me too, and we have so many little ones to help. But the family needs our help. Help GSCC help the family. Help me help a stand out family in the community. Demonte didn't have any insurance and they need help with funeral expenses. Please if you never give for the GSCC please give to this cause. Click the donate button and type Demonte Thomas in the comment section. I promise on everything we have accomplished and love, all of the money will get to the family.

Thank You In Advance For your Kindness

Art Comes To The Garden

My wife Kim decided to do an art piece on top of the picnic table.
It looks beautiful. (and I am not saying that just cause she is my wife)

The Garden Gets A Makeover

We painted the raised beds and chairs in the garden this past weekend.
I repainted the garden signs myself.
The flower beds even got a touch up.

The Garden is Gaining Media Attention

Exciting news in the Garden! The word about the garden is spreading! Cub & I were on an Internet radio/tv show today in Detroit to talk about the garden & the GSCC's plans for the future. We were on the "Christian Guide" show with Martha Pye, which is found on www.motowngospelradio.com. The show will be available for the next 3-4 days on demand through the "Live Radio" button on the site's main page. Scroll down the page to find the "Christian Guide" show from Feb. 23.

Thanks to our friends at Detroityes.com, we gained even more attention as someone referred us to a blogger at Sweet-Juniper.com, who wrote an amazing article on Cub and the garden. He was also responsible for introducing Cub to a writer from TIME magazine, which is doing an article on positive things in Detroit. The spin is how artists, urban farming and such are bringing life back into the city. The reporter and photographers came out and were very impressed with what we’re doing and have done in such a short period of time. If we make the cut (which I am sure we will since they told Cub that the garden merits its own story!), it will be in this Friday’s issue. So, keep an eye out for Cub in TIME!

Greening of Detroit awards Georgia St. Garden a Hoop House

Hello all. Just found out today that the garden was awarded a hoop house from The Greening of Detroit. I can extend the growing season. I plan on planting some spinach, some more lettuce and some all greens mix. This also means I can start planting a little earlier.

Arriving Daily

I can recall about 15 years ago telling my mother that I was renting a tiller and was going to have a huge garden in our back yard.  Both my mother and brother laughed at me.  We lived on a half acre and I was a small person who was determined to have fresh, organic produce even if it killed me!

As my family stood on the side-lines laughing at me wading through muck with a rented rototiller, I knew I'd already won.  Yes, it was hard work and I usually ended up with a migraine from the heat but I continued to plow.  Later I had to put up chicken wire as I watched bunnies go into convulsions at all the free produce being grown.  Every day I was in that garden working.  I even had people stop just to admire all the work I'd done.  And it payed off.  I canned enough tomatoes to feed a small army.  I did that without the help of anyone.  So here's Cub's beginnings on land that hasn't been used in years.  It's a start and others ARE watching.  Including myself, The Amateur Gardner Who Will Not Listen To Anyone.
