Youth Market Garden

Next Year We Plan To Have A Youth Market Garden. The Lots Across The Street From The Community Center Will Be Prepped This Friday And Saturday With Lasagna Beds And Some Tilled Rows. Our Plan Is To Encourage More Of The Older Youth To Get Involved.

Community Center Progress!!!!!!

We installed a drop ceiling in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Community Center. We pray that we can intall a small kitchen area soon. We are trying to raise funds to have the furnace put in at the computer lab/ library. We have to install two furnaces because of the brick wall the city won't let us breach lol. Pictures to come soon.

The New GreenHouse Park

The record label for the english music group Above & Beyond shot a music video next door to th community center on Sept 4 2010. The idea of the video was to transform a vacant weed and trash filled lot into something that would benifit the neighborhood. So here is the new GreenHouse Park!!!! This winter if we can get some topsoil we will grow lettuce and spinach in our new 8'x20' greenhouse.
The song for the video is called On A Good Day. Look out for it. We will post it as soon as we get it.

Pallet Shed

Put together a storage shed in my backyard. Next spring I will put one up in the garden. Its 65 sq ft. Used 16 pallets.

Our New Garden

Our new garden will be called The Holcomb St Garden(Sapphire). It is located at the corner of Georgia St and Holcomb St, across the street from my church Christ Word Outreach Ministries.
Our sapphire garden (Georgia St is our Diamond Garden) will be more of a park setting with trees, flowers and benches. We will of course have a large selection of vegetables and we will have a composting area. This garden will be four connected vacant lot's, our biggest and most tranquil.

The Power of One

Cub resides on Georgia Street in Detroit.  Originally, this neighborhood was a working class German/Polish neighborhood.  100 years later, it is prairie fields, burnt or abandoned homes wedged in with hardworking people trying to make ends meet.  Just as the people in this neighborhood did 100 years ago, the past makes an example for those in the present.  DO IT YOURSELF.

So begins the power of one man who was sick of seeing his neighborhood used as a dumping ground.  As Cub begins picking up three lots no longer used, he ropes off the properties and calls it The Georgia Street Community Garden.  Land not used in years is rock hard.  This is going to be tough work for one person but he posts his beginnings on Detroityes. com and people become interested.  

Sections of garden are spaced out but a heavy-duty tiller is still needed.  One man with a rototiller cannot do all of it, though I'm pretty sure Cub will give it his all.  Cub even has the great idea of recycling rubber tubing that original housed cable that was dumped on the curb to use as fencing.  Great idea!
